Christian counseling has one clear purpose: restoration. Isaiah 61:1 captures this beautifully—“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me… he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.” Your ministry is not just about advice-giving; it is about leading people back into wholeness, alignment, and peace with God.
When people come to you, they are often fragmented—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally. Your task is not to make them dependent on you but to help them reconnect with Christ, the true source of healing. If counseling ends with you, it has failed. If it points them to Jesus, it has succeeded.
This purpose gives you clarity. In every session, ask yourself: is this leading the person toward healing, toward freedom, toward alignment with God’s design? If not, it may be time to refocus. Counseling without a clear purpose can turn into endless conversations with no fruit.
Your role is to walk with people until they can stand whole again—not because of your wisdom, but because of God’s restoration. You are simply a channel of His healing.
Self-Assessment
1. Do I clearly understand that the purpose of counseling is restoration and alignment with God?
2. Am I pointing people more to myself or to Christ in my sessions?
3. How can I sharpen my focus on God’s purpose for each counseling encounter?
